Wool: The Ultimate Summer Material
Ever invested in wool for the winter? Maybe a sweater that's sole purpose is to prepare you for the unbearable cold bite of winter? If not, we're sure you're aware of the circumstance. It seems like just a month ago we were loading up on everything wool to keep our bodies warm in the blustery New England bilzzards: socks, sweaters, hats, gloves, maybe even wool underwear too (who are we to judge). Because nothing works quite like wool to insulate and block out the cold. Which is why it's engrained in us that wool = warm. Right...?
But wool is one of those "magic" materials that is truly (sans BS) versatile. Keeping us warm in the winter and COOL in the summer...
Here are the qualities that make wool such a reliable summer material:
We're already aware that wool is known for its insulation, but the temp regulating actually works both ways. Wool is an active fiber that reacts to body temperature, keeping the heat out and the cold in just like your trusty thermos.
Wool also houses tiny air pockets in each fiber. This provides that insulation we were talking about, but also breathability. Sounds a bit contradicting, yeah? ...or like some sort of sheep sorcery. But in reality, we can thank chemistry (yay, science!) for the all-natural process. These air pockets draw in moisture (i.e. sweat) where it's absorbed, broken down, and subsequently released into the air. This keeps foot swelling down and you'll actually sweat less than in shoes made of synthetic fabrics.
So you're keeping cool and lowering sweat, which fights stink foot from the start. But in case you're a heavy duty sweater, or aren't entirely convinced, wool is odor-resistant as well.. (we know, it just keeps getting better and better!) Wool controls odor not only by its breathability, but by its ability to stint bacteria growth too. Unlike synthetic fabrics, wool does not retain odors and will keep fresh just from airing out.

Ditch the socks! You don't need them here...
Ok, you're probably already on the wool bandwagon by now, but we're just going to throw this next one in for that extra kick. On those days where you're going all out summer: digging in dirt, dripping ice cream cones, or running through fresh cut grass, have no fear! Our natural wool fiber shoes are easy to maintain. Your pair of sneakers and urban woolers can be machine washed (wool cycle, 30 degrees Celsius, special wool detergent, slow spinning, and air dry or no tumble-dryer).
